Facebook has patched a critical vulnerability in the Facebook Messenger for Android mobile app, which could have let attackers spy on other Facebook users using audio and video calls, according to one of the researchers who discovered the bug.

The vulnerability was discovered by researcher Ben Johnson, who detailed his findings on his blog on Friday. It isn’t yet clear how the bug allowed malicious attackers to surreptitiously listen to, or record, any conversations made on the Messenger app, which has more than 450 million users, Johnson said, facebook messenger tracking software.

Facebook was aware of the vulnerability and had patched it in early September but the bug was publicly disclosed on Friday.

If an attacker is able to make a call using the vulnerability, it will use the audio or video call as the basis of another call, Johnson said in a post on his blog.
